If your goal is to work, whatever your position, you must acquire a letter of guarantee from an Indonesian company. It’s sometimes known as a sponsor. This is not limited to PT PMA (companies with foreign share ownership). But also for PMDN (companies with local ownership) that want to bring in foreign workers.
However, you don’t need sponsorship from the company if you are a shareholder in a PMA company. But the minimum share ownership value is IDR 1 billion. If it is below that, you cannot apply for an Indonesian KITAS.
Aside from that, you also need to prepare various main requirements documents and other supporting documents. These include a passport photo, insurance from the registered insurance firm in Indonesia, and proof of ownership of a balance equivalent to USD 2000.
There are also some additional documents that you have to provide based on the kind of KITAS that you want to apply.

- First you must apply to the Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal (BKPM) for a Limited Stay Visa (VITAS) and Limited Stay Permit (ITAS).
- Next you need to obtain a letter from the Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan (Ministry of Labour) granting you a work permit.
- Then the company who sponsors you, needs to obtain an approval for your RPTKA (Expatriate Placement Plan) from Kementerian Ketenagakerjaan, which allows your company to hire foreign employees.
- Upon your arrival in Indonesia, you can convert your VITAS to an ITAS, and then it will be converted again to be white card document known as KITAS
