What is KITAS?
As we know that all countries in the world have their own regulations regarding work permits for foreign citizens. This also applies in Indonesia. Where the Work Permit that applies in Indonesia is often referred to as KITAS.
KITAS is a short form for Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas (Limited Stay Permit Card). However, because it is no longer in the form of a card (Kartu), the letter K in KITAS has been removed and it is now commonly referred to as ITAS.
It’s not too essential but we need to convey, so you don’t need to misunderstand, that ITAS and KITAS are the same document. It’s just a different name.
As the name suggests, KITAS functions as a residence permit only. But if you apply for a KITAS with index C-312, then the KITAS also serves as a work permit.
KITAS Process In Indonesia: Acquire VITAS first before KITAS
But before applying for a KITAS, you must first apply for a VITAS. VITAS stands for Visa Tinggal Terbatas (Limited Stay Permit Visa).
This VITAS is different from the general Visa which is valid for visiting Indonesia in a short time. While with VITAS, you can have a longer stay permit. The duration of stay also varies according to the type of VITAS you will apply for.
However, if you want to work in Indonesia, then you must apply for a VITAS with the C-312 index. Before applying for a C-312 indexed KITAS, you first need to have the following documents:
- Application letter and Letter of guarantee from the sponsor company (The company must be registered with a business entity form of PT PMDN or PT PMA)
- A passport that is still valid for at least 30 months since the VITAS application
- Bank savings book
- Recommendation from the Ministry of Manpower
Once you have all the documents above, you can apply for a KITAS to Indonesian Immigration.
Convert Your VITAS into KITAS
To be able to get a stay permit and work permit, after arriving in Indonesia you need to immediately convert your VITAS C-312 to KITAS. The acceptable duration is a maximum of 30 days from arrival in Indonesia to convert VITAS to KITAS.
You can convert it at the local immigration office. Where you will live and work in that area. Once successfully converted, you have an official permit to live and work in Indonesia. The KITAS will look like the picture below:
